As many 5th graders know Nevada became the 36^th State to join the Union.
It happened  150 years ago on October 31, 1864.

In Nevada this date is mostly known as “Nevada Day”, but in other parts of the country its known as Halloween. Nevadans and Las Vegans alike are thrilled about this double day of celebration as Clark County Schools will be closed as well as Las Vegas Municipal Offices, Courts, and  Libraries.

Friday, October 31, 2014 at 10 a.m., the Las Vegas Nevada Day Parade will be held downtown along 4th Street.
The parade will feature six categories with a Nevada 150 theme: float, equestrian, marching band, motorized vehicle, walking group and other.
Cash prizes will be awarded for the following categories: overall Best Of, Best Historical Significance, Best Float, Best Equestrian, Best Marching Band and Best Vehicle. The parade will be produced by the City of Las Vegas and is made possible through a $100,000 grant from the City of Las Vegas Centennial Commission through its Las Vegas Centennial History Grant Program.

5 Pumpkin Carving Tips

Halloween is definitely  one of our favorite holidays! There is no better way to get you in the mood to celebrate it than taking a trip to the local pumpkin patch, picking up a few pumpkins, and carving them into amazingly creations with your friends and family!
Perhaps you are not Martha Stewart and have not always had success in your past attempts.
Don’t Be afraid!

Check out these sure fire tips to get you started:

1. Cut the lid at an angel so the top does not fall in
2. Make indentations with the screwdriver before cutting all the way through with a knife
3. A long serrated knife or a pumpkin-carving kit knife with teeth will be necessary to cut through the thick flesh
4. Use a sawing motion and take your time cutting along the outside edge of your drawing
5. Rub the inside and outside , including all cut edges, with vegetable oil or petroleum jelly to prevent shriveling

Making roasted pumpkin seeds? Enjoy this Recipe!
ROASTED PUMPKIN SEEDS
Ingredients

• Pumpkin seeds (cleaned and raw)
• Salt
• Oil
• Seasonings (i.e. garlic, cayenne pepper)

Instructions

1. Boil pumpkin seeds in salted water for about 20 minutes.
2. Place seeds in foiled baking sheet and season as desired.
3. Roast in a 250 degree F. oven for about one hour, stirring two or three times.

Southwest Las Vegas Construction Updates

Road Construction Update

The hum of tractors, the pound of the hammers and the swirl of growth is nothing new for Southwest Las Vegas. The area has seen a massive development of new homes, great schools, amazing park facilities, and new retail shops.

The following information has been provided to Mountain’s Edge by Clark County Public Works:

• NDOT is pleased to announce the opening of the new Cactus Interchange over I-15.

• Clark County will pave Rainbow Blvd between Cactus Ave and Erie as a part of the Cactus Overpass project. They anticipate completion of the paving and opening of the overpass in Nov/Dec. The section of Rainbow from Cactus up to Blue Diamond is a separate project that will advertise for construction next year.

• Paving is scheduled of an additional north-bound lane on Durango Dr. at Blue Diamond Rd., just south of the intersection to help with traffic flow. It is anticipated to be complete by October.

Buffalo Dr., south of Mountain’s Edge Pkwy:

• Clark county is initiating a design within the available easement area on the SE corner of Buffalo and Mountain’s Edge Pkwy. to pave an additional north-bound lane through the intersection. The construction work will be schedule for completion by in-house crews within the next few month.

• A traffic signal has been added to the Clark County design list at the intersection of Buffalo and Mountain’s Edge Pkwy.

• County has declared that overall, most of Buffalo south of Mountain’s Edge Pkwy to Starr is not dedicated public right-of-way nor identified for improvements as a part of the development agreement with the Mountain’s Edge Builders. Off-site improvements along Buffalo and adjacent streets would be constructed as development occurs.
